About NFPA Public Education

The NFPA Public Education Division develops easy-to-use educational programs, tools, and resources to meet the needs of all ages and audiences in a variety of languages. This includes lesson plans, safety tip sheets, videos, and web sites, including Sparky School House and Sparky.org. NFPA has also been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week™ since 1922.

Strategies are integrated throughout our programs to reach those at highest risk including young children, older adults, people in low-income communities, and people with disabilities.

Sparky the Fire Dog®

Sparky the Fire Dog was created for the NFPA in 1951 and has been the organization’s official mascot and spokes dog ever since. He is a widely recognized fire safety icon who is beloved by children and adults alike. In addition to connecting with the public through educational programs, he has a very active website, sparky.org, which allows kids to explore and learn about fire safety in a trusted, interactive environment.
